In the delicate world of watercolours that inhabit the universe of Sentier, those by Pier Paola Canè carry with them the slow breath of an island and the lightness of memories that remain imprinted in the mind.
Formentera, for the artist, is much more than a place; it is a state of mind. “Contemplation is an essential part of being in Formentera,” Paola says, describing an experience made of endless sunsets, slow waves, and thoughts tinted with shades of blue. It is a powerful memory, the kind that accompanies those who leave with a single desire: to return as soon as possible.
In her watercolours, lighthouses, towers, dunes and beaches take shape. Small fragments of the island that, on paper, become almost places of memory. Looking at them, it is easy to imagine sitting in the square of San Francesc with a coffee, or among the rocks of Caló des Mort, immersed in a luminous silence.
The Formentera Paola tells through colour is not the island of glamour, celebrities, or polished photographs. It is a different island, made of slow seasons, open spaces and an endless sea. An essential, almost intimate landscape that emerges naturally in her paintings.
Her encounter with the world of Sentier gave rise to a collaboration that carried Paola’s watercolours beyond the island. Her landscapes began to travel, from the deep blue of the Mediterranean to blooming meadows and snowy mountains.
A journey that, in a surprising way, also brought the artist back to her roots. In the works created for Sentier, a subtle thread reappears, leading her back to childhood, to family trips to the mountains, and to the landscapes that first awakened her gaze.
In this way, Paola Canè’s watercolours become small visual stories: light, elegant, and capable of holding distant places and deep memories within just a few transparent brushstrokes.
